Pure Joy…

I felt like the 11th hour worker. For a while Jon t has been telling me that The Low Anthem were one of his favorite bands of ‘09 he had bought 4 tickets for their concert in Nashville last night, in the end only i could make it, and as i hadn’t heard much of their stuff i thought i’d stay for 3 or 4 songs then get home for an early night… how wrong i was! i was stuck to my chair…

Not since seeing The Welcome Wagon have i experienced such unadulterated organic brilliance…a genius mixture of american folk/blues/country using simple instrumentation…harmonium, fiddle, clarinet, guitars, upright bass, squeeze box, xylophone played with a bow!! they all took turns on the drum kit. The vocal harmonies sent chills, and Ben’s voice rose and fell with each song perfectly…

There was an amazing moment where they got the audience to call each other on speaker phone…”this is important wait til after verse 2…” telecom feedback ensued and filled the theater with some kind of moving digital birdsong…it kinda made me cry…but then again nothing new there!!

I’m off to buy Oh My God Charlie Darwin…laters…
