Ok so this is raw, my voice is scratchy and there are mistakes…in other words it’s not very good… but I haven’t uploaded anything for a while and I had some time today…

sometimes it’s like you have your face pressed up against a window wishing you could get let in and be a part of what’s going on inside.

on tuesday i got to be a part of a fantastic session at the sound emporium studios nashville.

the project, funnily enough called “let me in”, is a collection of paul mccartney songs produced by phil madeira.

phil and the guys are like a who’s who of the americana/roots world here in nashville, used to working with the likes of emmy lou harris, robert plant and buddy miller

this was my second session for phil madeira and i loved every minute…no click or grid, all playing at once… if one person screws up you all have to start again…

i was on dobro/acoustic/12 string and bgv duties

thanks guys for a great day!

This week One Sonic Society is in the studio at The Tracking Room Nashville.

We’re recording a live worship event on Friday night with 70 plus guests singing with us…in our natural environment…a studio in Music City.

Apart from Jason, Paul and I we have the privilege of having, Jimmy Abegg (guitars and mando) Tony Lucido (bass)  and Matt Stansfield (keys) playing with us. We will also be joined by Cara Fox (cello)

An amazing week by anyone’s standards!

Having fun recording with Desperation band last summer for their record Center Of It All which has just been released.

I played ok but getting a reaction like that from producer Paul Mabury means a lot!

The boys did a fantastic job and much respect to guitarist extraordinair Matt Paco

today at vanderbilt

getting ready to take part in a class on songwriting and theology today at vanderbilt university.

honoured to have been asked by dave perkins who is an inspiration to me as a musician and guitar player!

as part of the prep everyone (students and teachers) have had to read a section of a book by marva dawn called “reaching out without dumbing down” in it she quotes walt whitman who said this…

really looking forward to being a part of the discussion!

Lead Me To The Rock Paul Baloche, Stu Garrard, Lakewood Choir CompassionArt 134 Plays

Last night I joined Paul Baloche, All Sons And Daughters and Jason Ingram, to film some videos of Paul’s new songs.

I’ve known Paul for a few years now, but we really got to know each other at the CompassionArt writers week up at Cantle in Scotland.

We bonded over songs, firepits, kilts and Haggis… man he is such a great person and has been at the forefront of writing and leading songs for the church to sing for over 20 years. Every time we hang it just does my soul good.

Anyway I wanted to share a song we wrote together back in January 2008 for the Compassionart album called Lead Me To The Rock based on Psalm 61.

Our songs are just prayers right? and if all we can muster is a simple “help” or “thank you” it’s enough

I’m in the studio this morning listening back to this… so glad to have been a part.

Happy New Year!

Kingdom Of Comfort acoustic version

So it’s 2012…a new year. So why start with an old delirious? song and not a new one?

A little nostalgia?

maybe…

Actually I think that Kingdom Of Comfort is one of the best songs I’ve ever been a part of writing… and I want to go into this new year remembering the best of the past while living in the now.

I want to keep asking myself what am I building… a comfortable life? Or am I still living with big questions about what I’m here for and how does my living affect others?

Am I deaf to the cries of the oppressed, the poor and the powerless?

I hope that this new year is full of clarity, joy, peace, hope, success and fulfillment for us all!

peace

O Holy Night Stu G and Ben Cantelon 1,666 Plays

Advent with Stu g Day 23

O Holy Night with Ben Cantelon

It’s been two years since the last delirious? Show, and in that time It’s been an absolute privilege to work with a diverse bunch of artists.

Someone said to me early in 2010: “Stu maybe this season isn’t about striving to be who you are, but about you helping other people be who they are.”

I think about that everyday.

So when I got a chance to write and record with Ben Cantelon from London, I was thrilled.

Ben has a really, really great voice and is a skilled song writer and lead worshipper.

Just last week we were cutting guitars on his new record and I told him about my advent blogs. Yesterday, he sent me this vocal for O Holy Night and I built a little track around it with my (dubiously intonated 1937) Dobro  and an ebow orchestra.

Take a listen…and when he hits the high note at the end, if it doesn’t bring a tear to your eye, you have a heart made of “bah humbug” :-)

Happy Christmas Eve…Eve
